Cultured countertops made of marble are stunning. They look like real marble but they are a resin made by men that costs much less than real marble.
Some interesting stuff to note about grown marble (also grown onyx and granite):
They ‘re a product made from cast polymer. The resin made by man is liquefied, and the substance is poured into a mould to form the top / and drain.
It is a non-porous base, so it is resistant to stains and mildew.
Typically come with a gloss finish (a resin is used for this in the manufacturing process), but these tops can be ordered at a fraction of the cost with a flat finish to imitate solid surface materials such as Corian.anchor
They can be ordered straight in with sinks installed (or formed). These kinds of sinks are called integral treatment (compared to drop-in sinks, or self-rimming sinks).
You can mount cultured marble countertops yourself if you have a belt-sander, and are handy.
They are easy to keep clean (but be sure never to use an abrasive cleaner).
Come in a wide variety of colours and marbling (although it is not possible to guarantee the exact colour and marble-or veining-pattern, since each top is made individually).
Come in various patterns and types. The veining is often varied in the cultured marble countertops, but it doesn’t even have to be veined on your floor. Tops can look like solid colour, two-tone, onyx or granite.
For a dramatic effect, get a cropped marble vanity top with a different coloured integral tray.
Cultured marble countertops cost more than laminate tops, but they’re not much more than a laminate top with a drop-in sink, if you want an integral tub.
These tops in the bathroom look fantastic but they are rarely used in a kitchen setting. Under regular kitchen use they’ll scratch, scuff, and chip quickly. The bathroom generally doesn’t get as much wear and tear as the kitchen, and the bathroom can really “dress-up” the bathroom using cultivated marble countertops (or cropped marble in the shower, tub surrounding, or as a wainscot).
There are many companies that produce good marble countertops which are well made. You don’t need to buy the top from a major corporation to be sure you’ve got a decent top. Smaller firms can easily accommodate and afford the machinery to produce those tops. Some small businesses make the best tops.
