Around the globe, aesthetic or cosmetic surgery has become very common, with more and more people obsessed with their looks are now opting for cosmetic plastic surgery procedures to have an ideal feature.

Teenage and aged persons, especially girls and women specifically have been attracted to the process of beautifying, with a number of them are undergoing different kinds of aesthetic surgeries in order to improve their body image and looks.

The latest statistics by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that 13.8 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States in 2011, which is a 5 percent increase on the year before. In addition, the number of reconstructive plastic surgeries increased by 5 percent, with 5.5 million surgeries undertaken last year.

Cosmetic Surgery- an Overview

Cosmetic or aesthetic surgery is the best-known form of plastic surgery. This surgery is performed to enhance the appearance of otherwise perfect body parts of an individual’s body beyond the average level toward some aesthetic ideal.

As mentioned above, cosmetic plastic surgery procedures can be performed in two ways- surgically or minimally invasive procedures.

ASPS recognizes about 27 different kinds of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures that can be done to a person’s facial or body part. Some of the surgical aesthetic/cosmetic procedures include:

Breast augmentation (also called “breast implant” or “boob job”)
Mastopexy or breast lift
Rhinoplasty or nose job
Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck
Liposuction (Also known as suction lipectomy)
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery
Rhytidectomy or facelift
Lip enhancement
Chin augmentation
Ear surgery (otoplasty)
These cosmetic surgeries are done to shape any feature of a person’s body according to the way they want it to be. These procedures aim not only to make people look good from outside, but also feel good from inside.

The most common minimally invasive cosmetic plastic surgery procedures are Botulinum toxin type A or simply called Botox, soft tissue fillers, chemical peel, laser hair removal and Microdermabrasion.

Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to improve function and appearance to abnormal structures of the body impaired by congenital defects, such as cleft palates or cleft lips; developmental abnormalities, traumatic injuries, such as facial bone fractures and breaks; burn, infection, cancers, tumors or disease.

Tumor removal, laceration repair, maxillofacial surgery, scar revision and hand surgery are some of the commonly used reconstructive plastic surgery procedures.
