With the passage of time, we learned that despite being effective and helpful temporarily, repeated use of steroids is actually harmful. Luckily, with the advances in science, we have found innovative and targeted ways to treat such injuries. These new treatments are a part of regenerative medicine, known as Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy.

The Science of Regenerative Medicine

PRP and Stem Cell therapies work by injecting the own blood products of the patient into the injured area to promote body’s natural healing mechanism. Depending on where the injury is located, doctors draw out and isolate special corresponding cells known as mesenchymals that are immature cells extracted from bone marrow, blood and adipose tissues. Eventually, they are differentiated into fat cells (adipose cells), bone cells (osteoblasts), and cartilage cells (chondrocytes).

The cells are extracted from the patient and put in a special centrifuge in order to concentrate the cell mediators and healing factors. Cell mediators are material released from cells cause or regulate physiologic changes. The concentrate is then injected at the patient’s injury site to promote faster repair and regeneration of the damaged cells.

Evaluation Process

A thorough clinical evaluation is carried out by checking the patient’s complete medical history and physical checkup. The doctor reviews the past imaging of the patient, they may also order new imaging to decide if the patient is a candidate for Stem Cell Therapy or not.

Treatment Procedure

For the treatment, blood is drawn from the arm, and bone marrow and/or adipose tissues are extracted. The specimen are then processed and re-injected afterwards at the location of injury under completely sterile environment.

The duration of the procedure is 30 to 60 minutes. Specific instructions are given to the patient for post-treatment care and they are sent home. For the next few days, regular follow up is done through phone and then a week later, a re-evaluation is carried out at the clinic.
